Case Studies
This is a list of documents showing different aspects of applied CHP.
INDUSTRIAL
Hydro
Polymers
The
CHP plant at this modern polymer production plant has paid for itself in under
four years.
William Grant &
Sons Distillers
CHP reduces the cost and environmental impact of producing this famous brand
of Scotch whisky.
Immingham – 735MW plant supplying electricity and steam to adjacent
ConocoPhilips oil terminal. Plans are underway to expand capacity to 1,180MW.
Aysleford
Newsprint – 98MW plant serving the growing energy demands of a modern
paper mill.
Dow Corning – CHP plant supplying electricity, steam and process water to the chemical plant.
Millenium Chemicals – Titanium Dioxide manufacturing plant utilising CHP at over 80% efficiency.
DISTRICT HEATING
Aberdeen City Council – Awarding winning district heating scheme. Initially targeting vulnerable customers, the council has now installed CHP for 850 flats along with 8 public buildings. Fuel bills and CO2 emissions have been reduced by around 50%.
Sheffield – Extensive district heating scheme. Customers include the University of Sheffield, Crown Court, Lyceum theatre, Millennium Galleries, and Winter Gardens.
Grosvenor Waterside – Mixed use development in Chelsea, London. Energy is provided by both biomass and natural gas CHP.
Woodbrook – A biomass district heating scheme for over 350 homes in a Belfast ‘Eco-village’.
Targoviste – A Romanian scheme supplying around 16,000 homes and 270 schools and businesses. CO2 emissions have been reduced by over 300,000 tonnes per year.
ON-SITE GENERATION
Ards Leisure Centre – Switching to CHP saves this Belfast leisure centre over £35,000 per year.
Hydebank Young Offenders Centre – Installation of CHP alongside a boiler room upgrade led to savings of over £44,000 per year.
Nottingham University – Installation of 2 CHP units and a prototype trigeneration system.
Nuneaton Town Hall – A Warwickshire local authority replaces aging boilers with CHP.
Royal Shrewsbury Hospital – A Community Energy Grant helped fund this trigeneration system that saves the NHS Trust £780,000 per year.
Tresellick Gardens – A National Trust property in Cornwall using LPG to fuel a CHP plant.
London Fire Stations – Fire stations are ideally suited to CHP applications and these examples are saving thousands of pounds and tonnes of CO2.
Crawley Leisure Complex – Crawley Borough Council installed CHP at this new leisure complex to help meet sustainability criteria.
Aquadome Leisure – Leisure complex with water slides and river rides saved £50,000 per year by installing a 210kW CHP system.
Lincoln
Court – A CHP plant has reduced fuel bills by 30% at this sheltered
housing complex in Newcastle.
