The City Corporation is the main customer
for heating and cooling from the City of London CHP Tri-generation Scheme
operated by Citigen
(London) Ltd. This is a large community energy system serving both private
customers and City Corporation properties, the latter including the Guildhall,
Smithfield Market, the Barbican Arts Centre and the Museum of London. The
CHP system has been in operation since 1994 and was originally a City Corporation
initiative in the late 1980s. Output of the central power station is currently
15 MW electrical, 21 MW heat and 6.5 MW chill. The dual-fuel CHP engine is
one of the largest in the world to run on natural gas. Chilled water is produced
by absorption chillers using heat from the engine. The City Corporation's
subways and basements are used for the distribution of hot and chilled water
and the transmission of electricity to the local grid connection point.
