The CHPA Annual Awards Dinner was held on Thursday 15th November 2012 in the Great Hall at Lincoln’s Inn. Now in its fifth year, the CHPA Awards showcase achievement, innovation and best practice from across the sector over the past year. Almost 300 professionals from organisations across the sector met to celebrate success and collective attainment.
This year’s nominees covered an extraordinary range of businesses and enterprises, including pharmaceuticals, hospitals, universities and farms. In total, the projects put forward for awards are delivering savings of over £5m per year and reducing carbon emissions by more than 130,000 tonnes per year.
Commenting on the awards, CHPA Director, Graham Meeks, said:
“These awards demonstrate that green is working, with investment in energy efficiency making real business sense as we pull out of recession. It is very positive to see the extent to which the industry has responded to the present economic difficulties, making investment in CHP systems increasingly affordable and making their operation increasingly flexible.
“I am also delighted to see the growing proportion of schemes that are combining the efficiency of CHP with the carbon benefits of renewable resources – a key factor in two of our winners and one highly commended project.”
There are five project categories: Industrial and Commercial, Public Sector, Innovation, and Campus, Community and Residential; and an individual Champion award. The winners of each category were as follows:
Industrial and Commercial – DEIF UK Ltd, Copys Green Farm, Norfolk
DEIF has supplied a gas control system providing a reliable solution for a problematic anaerobic digester gas fuelled CHP project, operating on a dairy farm with an associated cheese making business. The farm is self-sufficient in the production of feedstock for the digester and the entire volume of gas produced is used as fuel for the CHP.
Highly Commended – ENER-G/GlaxoSmithKline, various GSK sites
Public Sector – NHS Grampian/Centrax, Foresthill Health Campus, Aberdeen Royal Infirmary
The Foresterhill Health Campus is served by a new energy centre that integrates a gas turbine CHP plant with a biomass boiler and three further dual fuel boilers to provide heat and around 90% of the electricity requirement of the site.
Highly Commended – Hill Dickinson LLP/Southport and Ormskirk NHS Trust and Edina/Royal Liverpool Hospital
Innovation – ENER-G/Tesco PLC, ENER-G Universal CHP System
Ener-G has developed its ‘Universal’ unit – initially for Tesco – a smaller footprint system that offers the same energy cost and carbon savings as larger CHP packages, but is faster to install and commission and offers a reduced environmental impact of manufacture. The ‘plug and play’ design criterion helps to provide the flexibility to relocate plant from site to site. Tesco has introduced the Universal CHP system to 27 UK stores so far.
Highly Commended – Fleetsolve, bio-fuelled CHP engines and renewable bioliquids
Campus, Community and Residential – ENER-G/Loughborough University, Campus, Conference Centre and Business Park.
The CHP infrastructure at Loughborough builds on the three CHP units in the existing energy centre which provides heating, cooling and electricity to the University’s Holywell Park conference centre. After the success of the university business park installation, ENER-G was appointed to supply a further CHP system for the main campus.
Champion - Paul Woods, Technical Director, AECOM
Paul Woods has a longstanding and highly distinguished career in CHP and district heating, stretching back as far as 1983 when he moved into the field from the nuclear sector. What set Paul apart is his willingness to employ his unrivalled expertise and his engineering integrity to champion CHP and district heating – not by banging the table or taking to the airwaves but rather through his obvious objectivity, analytical rigour and reasoned argument. This is an approach which he has taken consistently through countless publications, conference papers and through his work on the committee of the CIBSE Combined Heat & Power (CHP) & District Heating Group. Most recently Paul has been closely involved with others in the industry in building a deeper understanding within Government – from Ministers downwards - of various facets of CHP and district heating. There are few within the industry who have worked as hard, for as long, and in as many forums as Paul to advance the case of CHP and district heating.

About District Heating
A district heating scheme comprises a network of insulated pipes used to deliver heat from the point of generation, in the form of hot water or steam, to an end user.
