Sustainability Statement

The Combined Heat and Power Association has taken every step to ensure that the Annual Conference and Awards Dinner 2009 are as sustainable as possible, and that negative environmental impacts are minimised. The event has been managed in line with the recommendations made by the British Standard for Sustainable Event Management (BS8901).

This includes the following:

  • Selecting venues easily accessible by public transport, with recycling facilities and a robust Environmental policies:

Conference venue: One Great George Street is committed to sourcing renewable energy, implementing energy saving measures including light sensors and insulation, conducting staff awareness raising and training, and has carried out a sustainability audit of their suppliers. Waste streams are recycled and regenerated:

Kitchen waste, wood and packaging are incinerated at SELCHP and transformed into electricity

Paper, card, plastics, and tin cans are recycled and glass is crushed at SELCHP for use in tarmac manufacture

Cooking oil goes to a bio-fuel plant and is turned into biodiesel

Awards Dinner venue: Banqueting House monitors its water and energy use and is working to minimise consumption. The venue also has calculated its carbon footprint and is taking action to reduce this by providing public transport information to visitors, carefully managing its waste and recycling and adopting sustainable procurement practices. Banqueting House is also connected to the Whitehall CHP scheme. We will also work with the catering and production companies to minimise the amount of energy used during the event.

  • Using electronic communications wherever possible and printing all delegate materials on recycled paper. We are using an electronic booking system and making presentations from the Conference will be available online after the event to reduce the need for printing. The Awards application process is also entirely electronic.
  • Requesting sustainable catering options, including fair-trade coffee, items with minimal packaging, no bottled water and food produced in accordance with accredited farming methods. The food served at the Conference and Awards Dinner will be seasonal and locally sourced.
  • We will also calculate the unavoidable carbon emissions, and our Event Managers, SE2, will offset these through Pure

Delegates are encouraged to travel to the conference by public transport. The following websites may be of use:

• The Transport for London website has a Journey Planner tool that may be of assistance.

• For those coming on foot, the Walkit website may be useful.

• If you require a taxi, we recommend Green Tomato Cars or ecoigo
