Granada TV studios, Manchester

The historic Quay Street studios in Manchester have been harnessing the benefits of an ENER-G combined heat and power unit (CHP) for nearly 10 years to help produce some of the UK’s most popular television programmes.

Manchester’s historic Quay Street Studios, now owned by 3sixtymedia, is one of the UK’s premier facilities for TV production, providing a well maintained working environment for staff members across three digital studios and several filming spaces. The studios which have been home to some of the most popular television productions of recent years including Countdown and Coronation Street, were the first purpose built television production studios in the UK.

In 2001 due to increasing energy demands, the studio decided that the need for a long-term energy solution was essential to cut costs and lower carbon emissions. After considering a number of available solutions the decision was taken to install a 1MW ENER-G Combined Heat and Power (CHP) unit and an absorption chiller making this a Trigeneration system.

This system is now in its 9th successful year of operation and continues to provide significant savings. The annual cost savings have been in excess of £200,000 per year and the projected savings figure for the 10 year scheme is £2 million.
