Scottish and Southern Energy is one of the largest energy companies in the UK. We are involved in the generation, transmission, distribution and supply of electricity; energy trading; the storage, distribution and supply of gas; electrical and utility contracting; and telecoms. We are currently the leading renewable energy supplier in the UK, with 9.7% of the energy we generated in 2006/7 coming from renewable sources, and have set our own unilateral company performance target of achieving a 20% improvement in carbon intensity in our generating portfolio by 2016 (relative to 2005/06 levels).
SSE has over 20 customer CHP plants with over 50MWe output in total, and a numerous other projects at different stages of development, right across the UK. These include current construction of new CHP for domestic and consumer mixed use in Woolwich. In addition, SSE has recently agreed to acquire assets in Slough Heat and Power Ltd, including a CHP plant with potential generating capacity of 101MW, which makes it the UK's largest dedicated biomass energy facility. In addition, SSE is participating in a joint venture with the Carbon Trust to support InSource Energy Limited, the bio-waste to energy business.
SSE's target sales sectors are in defence, health, transport, education, volume housebuilders and land development. We have a dedicated in-house team targeted at developing and delivering new projects, an industry leading customer service package, and are fully committed to the further development of the Energy Services Company (ESCo) concept. We will continue to maintain a diverse, sustainable and balanced generation portfolio, seeing CHP as an important component of this going forward
